Chapter Ten

That afternoon Shannon went to the website of an office supply outlet located in a nearby city, a place Phillip had recommended. She picked out some basic furnishings and some needed office supplies that were necessary to get started. She knew she could get more once she started working and realized what might be missing. All of it was scheduled to be delivered the following Tuesday. They had said they could bring it Monday, but she had the doctor appointment with the children and was glad they could do it Tuesday instead.

Shannon paid for the purchase with a credit card Phillip had loaned her since she hadn’t yet opened a bank account. As soon as the transaction was taken care of, she drove with the kids to his clinic where they sat in the waiting room and visited with Daphne for a short while before Phillip was available. She gave him back the credit card and an envelope with cash to cover the entire purchase.

“Thank you,” she said. “You make everything so easy.”

“Selfish reasons,” he said with a grin.

She smiled back but didn’t comment. “Now I just need some clients.”

“Oh, I had an idea about that,” Daphne said, which made it apparent she’d been eavesdropping, even though neither of them were trying not to be overheard.

I was thinking she could just add a little thing about how great it is that we have an attorney right here in town, put a couple of impressive credentials—which of course is not a problem. And just list a few of the services you can offer. That might bring in a few clients, at least.”

“That’s a great idea,” Phillip said. “Thank you, Daphne.”

“Okay,” Shannon said, “I’ll write up a little thing and . . . should I just . . .”

“Email it to me,” Daphne said, writing down her email address on a sticky note while she spoke, “and I’ll send it along and make sure it gets in the next issue—which should be coming out soon, I think. If we hurry we might get it in there.”

“Great,” Shannon said. “I’ll go right home and take care of it.”

Back at the apartment, Shannon sat down at the computer and wrote a brief summary of information, just as Daphne had suggested. She listed the most commonly used legal services that would apply to average citizens, all of which she was legally qualified for and capable of doing. She hoped not to have to do too many divorces, preferring to do such things as wills and estate trusts. And of course there were many other little legal things that people had to deal with,
